“Did you assume that he's dead?” Under the dreadful circumstance, Number 12 had to plant a thought in John's head to imply that Han Jingru was still alive, in order to keep himself safe.
He figured that John would not dare to lay a finger on him, in fear of being revenged by Han Jingru if he did not die.
Unfortunately, John did not fall for Number 12's lie. He grinned from ear to ear. “Do you think that lie will scare the living daylights out of me? You've seen how the eruption went on for one whole day. Who could survive that great catastrophe?”
John was awfully certain that Han Jingru was dead. The eruption lasted too long and coupled with the massive outbursts, it can easily wipe out an entire nation, let alone one man who was literally inside the volcano.
Han Jingru's not been back for a day now. If he's not dead, what else could it be?
Number 12 could not refute that. Although he had been affirming himself repeatedly that Han Jingru was still alive, he knew in his heart that he was in denial.
