Chapter 16 The Betrothal Gift

  • Emmanuel told his wife that James and Victoria were divorced; they needed to visit Serene’s family for a betrothal gift. He asked his wife to contact the Logan family. He wanted to send the engagement invitation cards this week. The billboards would be up as well. Mark had finished designing it. His wife was overjoyed when she heard her husband's words. She immediately called her son and asked for Serene’s phone number. James was very happy. He decided to go home for dinner. After dinner, Emmanuel and his family went to the study room. Mr Johnson said, “James, I want to thank you for keeping your word till the end. I am proud of you, my son. I welcome Serene Logan as my only daughter in law, and there will never be any daughter in law in the Johnson family except Serene. I asked your mother to contact the Logan family to find out if they are available on Saturday.”
  • His wife and son were over the moon. Mrs Johnson indicated that she received Serene’s phone number from James. James thanked his father for allowing him to marry Serene. His wife echoed James’s words and thanked her husband for keeping his promise. The family discussed the betrothal gift for Serene Logan. James smiled at his parents and said, “Dad and Mom, I think ten million rand will be fair as a betrothal gift.” His mother smiled and said, “I think it is a fair amount of money as well.” His father looked at his wife and son smiling, “let us prepare twenty million rand for their daughter.” After the meeting Mrs Johnson contacted her future daughter in law, Serene Logan.
  • On Saturday, the Johnson family visited the Logan family with gifts. Serene’s parents accepted the betrothal gift. The Logan family was not wealthy like the Johnsons. They were shocked when they saw the bride price the Johnsons gave them. It was twenty million rand. They thanked the Johnson family; Serene’s parents were aware that James’s parents didn’t like their daughter, the atmosphere was not harmonious. The housekeeper told them that lunch was ready, so they went to the dining room to eat. Since they were not familiar with the Logan family, after lunch they left. Mrs Johnson had not forgiven Serene for refusing to wear the ring she gave James. In fact, she didn’t like Serene, she thought she loved vanity. When they were in the Logan family, Serene didn’t pretend to like them either. She hated them for delaying her with James.
