Chapter 307

  • "Make sure you tell her next time you talk to her, and if she feels hesitant at all make sure you tell her that I insist. Does she know how to cook?" She asks me as the back door opens down the hallway, I can hear Peter and Rhode walking back into the house and talking off in the distance.
  • "She can cook, but she's an incredible baker. Whenever we had a little bit of spare money she would bake up a literal storm in our tiny little kitchen" I reminisce with a smile as Eloise beams while listening to me talk.
  • There were a few good years before my dad left. We had a place to live and mum seemed to be relatively healthy. I would come home from school some days to cherry pies, chocolate tarts and flaky pastries, baked with budget ingredients but made so incredibly beautifully. It was one of the sadder parts of her illness, she completely lost her sense of creativity, spirit and the love she had to give. She'd burn toast and set off the fire-alarms while staring motionless at the wall in front of her. I tried to help her bake, to try and inspire her into teaching me how to do it, she'd call me names and tell me I was working with the devil before locking herself in her room and forbidding me from trying to trick her ever again. But maybe now that she's better, I'll get to see her the way that she used to be again.
