Chapter 204

  • I lean against the doorframe and take in the room as she moves around. It's somehow bigger than her old room, but not nearly as nicely decorated. There's no hanging twinkling lights and no plants fake or real anywhere in sight. The only real brightness in her room is stacked in the corner, a small collection of canvases partially covered up by a white sheet. She told me she had started painting since we broke up, and I'm desperate to pull the cover off and see them. But I don't want to invade her privacy, maybe one day she'll let me see them. But the rest of the rooms appearance gnaws at me; she's spent the last four months here and hasn't made any attempt to make it comfortable, to make it her home. When she showed up to my apartment she called me home, this is just the place that she sleeps. Maybe now she can start hanging up her photos again, string up her fairy lights, make it her own. Snooping over, back to this graduation thing.
  • "So you'll be a lot busier then?" I ask her as she walks to the set of drawers and pulls one of them back to expose a neatly folded array of t-shirts. She shrugs her shoulders, selecting two different shirts and carrying them both over to the bed.
  • "Only a little bit"
