Chapter 778

• Two weeks later, Levi told Thalia that he and Malachi were traveling to Montana to spend the weekend at the Council’s retreat near Bitterroot Lake. I started thinking when Thalia told me that because I didn’t really want to go to Alaska to see Malachi. What I had in mind wasn’t something you did over the phone.
• I drove the five hours to Bitterroot Lake and I stood in the woods and watched Levi as he locked the front door and drove off in the car. Malachi was alone in the house, not that you should call it a house, it was more like five houses in one. I had switched everything ‘wolf’ off earlier and I kept them off as I made my way to the back of the house.
• I opened the sliding door on the verandah and walked into the large living room. I could smell him and I heard him as he spoke on the phone, it was faint and I wasn’t sure where exactly in the house he was. I put the envelope down on the table next to the windows and poured a drink for myself.
