  • I saw her in a small room, her one foot shackled to the bottom steel bedpost that was bolted to the floor. The bed looked like a prison cot; a thin mattress, and an even thinner excuse for a blanket was placed over it, not showing one crease.
  • The chain around her ankle allowed her to move around the room without being able to reach the windows or the door. There was an open toilet, in one corner, with a basin, and I shuddered as I looked at her. The floor was poured cement, and the drab color made the room look colder than it was.
  • She looked half-starved, and she had long golden-brown hair, but it clung to her face in rat tails, and her nails were dirty. The light in her eyes had long since gone out as she sat staring out in front of her, but her whole demeanor changed when that door opened.
