• I sat on the bed and powered up the laptop. I searched for hotels in New York, close to where the next two people on my list lived. I still felt the same determination to complete my task, but Jules was now messing with my head. I knew that if I went after her now, I’d never go to New York and I would always wonder. In the long run I would resent her for it and that wouldn’t be fair to either of us.
• I booked a room in a hotel and I wanted to call my mom and ask her about Joseph and Dylan, but then she would know what I was up to. If they weren’t guilty I didn’t have to go to New York but I had no way of knowing if they were or weren’t.
• I picked up the shopping bag from the bed and Jules’ credit card was underneath it. She was mad and hurt enough to give it back to me. She was cutting all ties with me. I put it in the backpack and left the room key on the table. I couldn’t give up now. We shared a bond and I had to believe that the bond was strong enough to overcome anything.
