- I sat staring out at the ocean for hours, or what felt like hours. My back was stiff by the time Gunnar’s car pulled up next to mine. He got out and sat down next to me on the hood of my Jeep. We sat in silence for a while and I felt like a bad friend. I hadn’t talked to him about anything that really mattered for weeks now. I was caught in my own web of confusion and guilt.
- “What’s going on with you, Kai?” he finally asked me. I could hear it in his voice. He was worried about me but he was also a little irritated.
