Chapter 598

• Paul put his one arm around my shoulder and led me to the door of the bar. We stepped outside and I took big gulps of the fresh air to try and sober up. We walked around the corner into the dark parking lot behind the bar where his car was parked. I saw it standing right at the back and I stuck my hands in my pockets.
• Paul walked ahead to his car and I turned at the noise of footsteps behind me. I saw the group of men too late, and the baseball bat connected with my back. There were five of them, and I went down as I stumbled, and they kept hitting me.
• I was way too drunk to do anything, as the blows rained down on me. I kept my arms over my head and face as they started kicking me. “Asshole! You think you can assault my brother and get away with it!” I didn’t recognize the voice but I knew exactly what this was. Payback.
