Chapter 89
- It took us a little longer to get to this next pack. We were running for about five hours before we stopped to take a break at a stream that we came across, and we had a rest. Ethan suddenly stood up when he heard voices in the distance, and we all stayed really still, listening to them in the distance. Listening to their conversation and everything. We soon determined that they were just hikers, but we couldn't risk being seen.
- "Come on. Let’s get going," Ethan told us all, his voice steady but low, so only we could hear him through our mind link. No one argued. We stood up, our paws leaving wet prints on the mossy ground, and slipped into the stream to mask our scent. The cold water rushed around our legs as we moved, making me shiver, but it was necessary. We crossed to the other side and continued in the same direction we had been heading before, away from the voices of the hikers and the possibility of discovery.
- I cast one last glance over my shoulder, hoping that the humans would never know just how close they came to us that night.
