Chapter 49

  • "Alpha, you requested a stack of new manila folders," she says, her heels clicking against the polished floor as she saunters her way over to the desk with exaggerated grace, her hips swaying in a way that was clearly meant to attract attention. Shifting around to look slowly at her, I did not at first perceive that I was glaring at her. It was something that had been simmering down below, but when she looked suggestively at Ethan, the red mist came down.
  • "No, I did," I said firmly, my voice coated with a harsh tone that cut through the tension in the air. She was startled by my words and nodded her head and did not protest. She did it, however, with palpable slow deliberateness, laying the folders on the desk and turning back to Ethan. He was kept there with his eyes under her eyes as though he were pre-cut pieces of meat. Ethan glanced in her face and then, with that inexpressible expression, wholly forgot that she was a human being and turned back to me.
  • "Do you like this job?" "Dangerously?" I asked.
