• He was mind-linking me the whole time because I was the only one that he could mind-link with, and they were going to approach me before they got to the others. I was the closest to the soldiers.
• I could see that the soldiers all had their guns out, held tightly in front of them, their fingers ready to pull the trigger at any given moment. But I couldn't pick up the scent of silver on any of their weapons. That was a small relief, because it meant they were using regular bullets. Those types of rounds could still be deadly if they hit us in the heart or head, but we could recover from most other injuries. Even a direct hit to a major artery wouldn't stop us for long.
