Chapter 44
- I could imagine how confused Ethan and the warriors were after they returned to the pack. The expressions on their faces spoke volumes; they simply had not anticipated what they witnessed. Wreckage was everywhere, smoke still rose out of certain of the houses, and the air was still filled with the odor of ash and blood. They had been away in the melee, going to the rescue of those girls, and now they were walking into what was only a warzone. I had to attempt to make them understand everything, although now I had hardly any strength left, just to speak.
- "Where are all the people?" Ethan said, with an urgency that was yet calm, his eyes dashing about the silent and ruined town.
- "The injured were taken to the hospital," I answered quickly, trying to keep my voice steady despite the lump in my throat. "And the uninjured are in the shelter under the high school. I didn't know if there was going to be another attack or not, so I wanted to get them to safety," says I, looking across at the schoolhouse, peeping through the haze.
