Chapter 14

  • Mason, Ethan's Beta, whom I had already met during one of my earlier, more awkward introductions, entered the living room with him. He was accompanied by a few people I had not yet met: his Gamma Logan, a powerful man with intense eyes who seemed to constantly look around him for threats; Knox, the head warrior, whose very presence exuded discipline and control; and the pack's elders, Harrison, Kingston, and Diego. They all exuded a sense of history and authority that came from years of experience, wisdom, and service.
  • I said it was wonderful to meet everyone and gave them a courteous greeting. They all nodded or made silent acknowledgments in return for the courtesy. It wasn't too hot, but it wasn't cold either. There was hesitation and curiosity in the air, but no overt animosity, as far as I could tell. Not yet, anyway. I hoped that in time, I would be able to demonstrate that I was not a guest, a threat, or an obligation.
  • After giving me some consolation with a gentle handshake, Ethan and I strolled to the packhouse's conference room. Uncertain of what I was getting into, my heart was pounding a little, but I kept my head up and maintained a neutral expression.
