• First day of class of my senior year. I put on my uniform and white sneakers before walking to school. It was only an eleven-minute walk from my house. I headed to the auditorium and sat down in a chair at the back. In less than half an hour, the auditorium was packed. Annie arrived a little late, but managed to get a seat next to me, where, for some reason, no one else wanted to sit.
• "Lucky there was still a seat available," she said, smiling. I would say that luck wasn't quite the right word for it...
