Chapter 53

  • The sky was cloudy, coordinating the overwhelming disposition in the air as Matthew and Haven stood face to face in Matthew’s living room, their faces flushed with outrage. The room was filled with an awkward pressure, the kind that made each breath feel heavier. The walls of the room, as a rule filled with giggling, presently appeared to press in on them, catching them in a minute that neither one nor the other had expected nor needed.
  • Haven clenched his clench hands, his eyes bursting with a blend of disappointment and torment. "You knew how I felt about her, Matthew," he snapped, his voice trembling with stifled seethe. "We talked about it for a long time. She was my dream before you indeed met her!"
  • Matthew, some inches taller but just as sincerely charged, shook his head in disbelief. "You can't fault me for this, Haven! feelings aren't something you'll be able to just control. I didn’t plan on falling for Alexis—it just happened."
