Chapter 141
- Haven didn’t expect to see Alexis once more before long, but there she was at the back of the swarmed bar, nursing a glass of wine. The dim lighting did small to cover the redness beneath her eyes. Her engagement with Matthew was over, and the news had undulated through their mutual friends like a sudden blast in a calm room. Haven hadn’t planned to meddle, but seeing her slumped over, breaking away noiselessly, mixed something in him. He adjusted his coat, breathing out gradually before making his way through the swarm. Alexis didn’t take note of him drawing nearer until he slid onto the stool another to her.
- “You seem like you may use a friend,” Haven said delicately.
- Alexis gave a fatigued grin, lifting her glass toward him in a taunt toast. “Got any helpers? Mine appear to have vanished.”
