Chapter 126

  • Haven balanced his tie, looking at his reflection in the mirror against the walls. The business conference in Houston was an important one, something he looked forward to. He moaned, moving the leather portfolio under his arm. Social gatherings occasions were not his favourite, but his new business idea required speculators, and losing the opportunity would be silly.
  • The elevator door slid open with a delicate ding, giving a dance floor buzzing with voices. As he walked out, his eyes filtered the room, then they solidified. There, at the buffet table, stood Alexis. Haven’s heart dropped to his stomach. He hadn’t seen her in a long time, not since the agonising unravelling of their marriage. Alexis looked as brilliant as ever, her deep brown skin gleaming beneath the warm lights, her hair pulled into a smooth bun, and her figure wrapped in an impeccably custom-made navy-blue jacket.
  • For a minute, he was shocked. She hadn't changed. But what was she doing here? Haven talked about whether to slip out unnoticed, but before he could choose, Alexis turned her head. Their eyes met. A glint of acknowledgement crossed her face, taken after by a reluctant smile, small, nearly cautious. His chest fixed. There was no escaping now.
