Chapter 142
- Alexis sat solidly on the extravagant leather couch, hands clasped firmly in her lap. She abhorred this room. Everything about it, the calm colors, the delicate murmur of a diffuser, the deliberately placed box of tissues, shouted defenselessness. Powerlessness was perilous. Trust was dangerous. Here she was starting therapy, just perhaps that was the only way to get her head back together after a failed marriage and a failed engagement. It felt like she was the problem and these thoughts were disturbing her and affecting her socio relationship with people
- “Where do you want to start nowadays, Alexis?” Dr. Patel inquired, her voice calm, quiet. She sat over from Alexis in a wingback chair, legs crossed, a note pad adjusted on her lap, even though she seldom composed anything.
- Alexis abhorred that, the sense that Dr. Patel was trying to understand her without leaving a sign. Alexis shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s just the same. I don’t trust people. They let me down. I try, but it’s like. I continuously end up feeling demoralized for doing it.”
