Chapter 136

• Haven gazed out the window as the raindrops dropped on the glass, obscuring the streetlights into streaks of light. His phone sat on the kitchen counter, a dark screen reflecting his fretful expression. He tapped it, looking over through old messages from Alexis. Their later business felt more formal than familiar, nothing just like the simple cadence they once had. A deep murmur got away his lips. He had thought time would settle things, but each day broadened the hole between them. He still loved her, but she was now somebody else’s. She had made that clear when she left, but he told himself that he’d hold up quietly, just in case she needed him once more.
• His phone buzzed with a message. Haven leaned in. It wasn’t Alexis, it was a message from his pregnant ex, Vanessa.
• Vanessa: "Don’t forget the child plans for Friday at 10. Please be on time."
