• Concealing fear had been a trait Riley mastered. However, even the best façade housed a tell and hers was silence. I had grown accustomed to that exciting openness she recently adopted in my presence, but this quiet, assessing version of her rendered my focus dull. I had to get a hold of myself, there was denying that my productivity was reduced by half since I met her.
• “The key is not to be intimidated,” I say to her as I lead her to the training level. An entire floor dedicated to preparing our newest recruits. Riley was already at a disadvantage because despite these classes being tailored for the novices, most, if not all, of the recruits, were given basic training by their handlers.
