  • My mother hadn't picked a lock in years. Not since a time when my initial training called for it. Her role as mother, wife, and leader hadn't required many nefarious deeds in the latter years. I grinned over the sound of the tap running, my eyes trained on the screen of my cell phone as I moved my toothbrush along my jaw teeth. And to think I almost thought it useless to set up security cameras.
  • I noted my mother’s lack of attempt to ring the doorbell or knock. In all fairness, she’d been attempting to contact me since last night. I watched my cell phone ring all the way through to voicemail every single time. Most likely the reason she was hunched over the front door of my apartment intent on breaking in.
