• I stumbled into the house. The piercing clattering of my heels against the tiles faded off as I faltered to a stop, instantly drowning the large open space with a penetrating quietness. The anguish on my face was instantly replaced by a blank stare at the sight of a middle-aged woman blocking my path to the large ornate staircase.
• Soft, expectant eyes greeted me but I knew not what to make of her and I cocked my head to the side. Manners be damned, especially since my mind was preoccupied with his scornful eyes. There wasn’t any room for me to recall my social cues fast enough.
