- “We were beginning to think you got lost.” Todd cleared his throat and sat up straighter as I reappeared at the table. My eyes locked with my mother’s. She grinned at me nervously, a reminder that I should maintain a vision of politeness. I gave her a quick wink, unable to miss the narrowing of her eyes. I was certain, in that instant, she thought I was up to no good.
