Chapter 5 I Am Not Willing To

  • “This way, Ms. Lin.” The man's words snapped me out of my train of thought.
  • As I got into the car, the manager came running towards me, “Anan, don't worry about work, just go! I won't deduct your pay!”
  • Hearing that made me uncomfortable, as he would never treat me like this. Maybe he saw that I was on good terms with Mu Chenfeng and felt that it would be bad for him if he didn't treat me nicely.
  • The driver was a tall and handsome man in his thirties dressed in a very elegant suit. He glanced at me through the rear-view mirror, “My name is Jiang Xuanlong. I am one of Chief's subordinates.”
  • I couldn't help but ask, “Hello, is this Chief that you speak of Mu Chenfeng?”
  • He turned around and looked at me with a shocked expression on his face, “You didn't know?”
  • Did he mean that I should have known?
  • He saw that I was confused and continued, “Mr. Mu is the fourth in the family, and everyone here in Hai City calls him Chief out of respect. Few would actually address him by his name.”
  • I nodded slightly, and got lost in thought once again. How could my son possibly be Mu Chenfeng's? I've never even met this guy before, so how could I be pregnant with his child?
  • Could it be that the Chief they were referring to was a different person?
  • It would make sense that way too, as there are tens of millions of people here in Hai City, so there could be a lot of people called Chief. The Chief that Liu Jun mentioned was probably not Mu Chenfeng.
  • But, a voice inside me kept telling me that if such a person were to exist, I would rather him be Mu Chenfeng.
  • I felt ashamed of myself for having such thoughts, as we were both clearly from two very different worlds.
  • By the time I snapped out of my train of thought, we had already arrived at our destination.
  • I had seen pictures of the gray and white European-style building standing before my eyes.
  • Because it resembled the building where the President of the United States works, it was called the “White House of Hai City” by netizens. However, there was no information online as to who this building belonged to, and everyone only knew it as the mansion of a certain wealthy man in Hai City.
  • There was a lawn the size of a football field in front of the house with an arch made out of flowers. Rows of white chairs were neatly arranged in the center, and there was a huge screen with a certain advertisement playing in the background.
  • Even an idiot like myself could tell that this was the scene of Mu Chenfeng's wedding. Turns out he was getting married today.
  • But, why did he have me come all the way here for his wedding?
  • Jiang Xuanlong led me to the last row of seats and told me not to go anywhere.
  • I sat there for a few minutes and started to get anxious as I still hadn't seen Mu Chenfeng. I needed him to help me solve the problem with my son.
  • Guests started arriving one after another, all dressed elegantly.
  • Meanwhile, I was dressed in my work uniform, my hair greasy and my skin dull. I grew increasingly uneasy as I sat around all these wealthy people.
  • The way I looked at that moment was completely unsuitable for attending such high-end occasions.
  • I couldn't take it anymore and was about to sneak away, but two men in suits quickly came up to me and told me that Chief had requested them to look after me and asked that I return to my seat.
  • I could tell that they had to keep watch over me and prevent me from leaving, which made me feel even more anxious.
  • Just what did Mu Chenfeng want with me?
  • Right as I was trying to think of how I could escape, the crowd applauded as the bride slowly walked out in a white dress with her arm wrapped around Mu Chenfeng who was dressed in a tuxedo.
  • The music rang and the applause continued as the bride waved happily at the guests and walked slowly towards the stage.
  • The emcee for the wedding was the most famous TV host in Hai City, and the witness was the deputy mayor of Hai City.
  • The wedding went on according to procedure and got to the most important part where the witness asked the bride, “Ms. Xu Jiakai, do you take Mr. Mu Chenfeng to be your wedded husband to live together in marriage? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health and forsaking all others, be faithful only to him so long as you both shall live?”
  • The bride smiled sweetly, “I do.”
  • The witness then turned to the groom and asked the same questions, and right as everyone was expecting him to say the two words, he kept quiet.
  • The audience went silent and all eyes were fixated on the groom, but he remained silent. His eyes that were looking at the bride had now slowly turned towards the guests.
  • I felt my heart racing again, as he was now looking straight in my direction. At the same time, he slowly uttered the words, “I don't.”
  • The audience was in an uproar.
