Chapter 13 Manipulation

  • His tone grew cold when he saw me keep quiet, “What's the matter? You don't want to?”
  • I regained my composure, “Us getting married? How could that be......”
  • “I just want to give you a reasonable identity as well as a better future for the child. If you don't want to, then forget it.”
  • I wasn't unwilling. I just didn't know how to react as it all happened too suddenly.
  • “Mr. Mu......”
  • He turned around and waved at me, “Everyone calls me Chief, so you do the same from now on.”
  • “Chief......” I felt awkward addressing him like that for the first time. “I have a question. Why are you so kind to me and my son? I once asked you if he was...... Your child. You said no, but now you want to get married with......”
  • It was a sensitive topic so I was stuttering a lot and my face was burning.
  • “This isn't important. My marriage with Xu Jiakai didn't happen, so I have to answer to my family. Once we get married, the child will be registered to me. That way, I can protect him and give him a better life so he can grow and have a bright future ahead. As a mother, don't you wish for this as well?” He asked.
  • “But this is important to me. I want to know why you're doing this.” I pressed on.
  • “Are you asking me this because you don't trust me?” His tone grew cold again. “Do you think I would hurt the child? Or do you perhaps wish for the child to continue acknowledging Liu Jun as his father?”
  • If I had to choose between Liu Jun and Mu Chenfeng as his guardian, I'd definitely choose Mu Chenfeng.
  • Besides, I needed a lot of money for his treatment. If I didn't agree to his proposal, he'd definitely leave me and I would end up being helpless again.
  • “Alright.” I nodded.
  • Mu Chenfeng glanced at me, “That's more like it.”
  • I don't know why but I could see a lot of things in his eyes that I couldn't understand but feared greatly.
  • He turned to Jiang Xuanlong, “Get the car ready, we're going to fetch the child.”
  • “Chief, are you really going to butt heads with madam?” Jiang Xuanlong advised.
  • Mu Chenfeng loosened his necktie and his expression grew cold, “Go.” He then turned to me, “You just wait at home, I'll bring the child back.”
  • The mention of home warmed my heart once again, and I nodded as I believed he would definitely be able to bring Xiaoyang back.
  • After about an hour of waiting at home, Mu Chenfeng's car had finally returned.
  • The car door opened, and Mu Chenfeng walked over, carrying Xiaoyang in his arms.
  • I ran up to them, and he handed Xiaoyang over to me. “I always keep my promise.”
  • Xiaoyang wrapped his arms around my neck tightly, “Mama, I hate that old woman! I don't want to see her ever again!”
  • “I'm sorry, I didn't protect you well enough.” I teared up again.
  • “Next time something happens, call me first. Don't face it by yourself like that.” Mu Chenfeng looked at his watch, “I have to go on a short business trip, and will be back early tomorrow morning. Have your household register ready by then, and we'll go to the Civil Affairs Bureau.”
  • He rushed off after saying that, but stopped halfway in his tracks and came back to pat Xiaoyang on the head, “Be a good boy at home and protect Mama, okay?”
  • His eyes were filled with warmth and love when he said that, as opposed to his usual cold self.
  • My heart softened as I enjoyed the warmth of being protected which I had longed for.
  • Xiaoyang said goodbye to him and kept waving even after his car was gone. I could see that he had grown attached to Mu Chenfeng.
  • “Xiaoyang, would you want Mr. Mu to be your Papa?” I asked softly.
  • “Sure! Papa is a bad Papa! Mr. Mu is a good Papa!” Xiaoyang looked happy, and I felt relieved after hearing him say that.
  • Although Mu Chenfeng was always mysterious and difficult to understand, his kindness towards the child was real, and that alone was all that mattered to me.
  • I got up early the next day to get dressed. I opened the closet and saw a few sets of clothes that Mu Chenfeng had someone send over. They were all high-end brands that I could never even dream of affording before.
  • I picked one that I liked and sat in front of the dressing table to apply my makeup. I hadn't dolled myself in a very long time, and the stress from life had made me forget that I was only twenty-four.
  • After breakfast, Jiang Xuanlong called to tell me that Chief might only arrive at noon and asked me to wait at home.
  • I thought that the Civil Affairs Bureau wasn't far from Huadong Hospital, so I brought Xiaoyang to the hospital to enquire about his next treatment plan.
  • Once I found the doctor, I asked him how his next treatment would be done, how long it'd take and what preparations we would need to make.
  • He was vague in his response and told me to wait as he needed to discuss with the head physician first.
  • I got a little scared as I worried that the doctor might be hiding the fact that Xiaoyang's condition had worsened, so I secretly followed him to the head physician's office and listened to their conversation.
  • “Sir, Ms. Lin is here asking about her son's condition again. What should I tell her?” The doctor asked.
  • “Just tell her whatever you should. Do I even have to teach you that?” The head physician said.
  • “But sir, Mr. Mu had us falsify all the data from the test results. That child isn't sick at all, so we can't keep pretending that he is! If she got him checked at another hospital, she'd find out the truth!”
  • I was shocked, Xiaoyang wasn't sick? The test reports were faked? Mr. Mu had them falsify it?
  • Which Mr. Mu? Mu Chenfeng? Was he the one manipulating everything?
  • If so, why would he do this?
