- Old Five rose from his bed, drew back the curtains, and noticed that the gate in the yard was wide open. Hastily, he threw on a vest and stepped outside.
- Upon scanning the room, he found it empty, devoid of any trace of Bell.
- "Bell?" he called out into the yard, searched through the kitchen and bathroom, but found no sign of her presence.
