• “Yo, yo—what’s with you? I’m not Keith, okay? No way a couple of lines from me could knock you out cold. I’m feeling great—fit as a fiddle, appetite through the roof. Say whatever you want, I’m not scared.” Chadwick Fullner puffed himself up, thumping his chest like King Kong—bam, bam, bam—until Yasmin Langston and Madison Sawyer burst into teary laughter.
• He was really just trying to calm Yasmin and Madison down. Truth was, the knot in his chest was no smaller than hers. But thinking it through, this might be the perfect opening. Yasmin’s stance was already clear—she was just waiting for Keith Branwell to speak first. That one line from Keith had kicked a hornet’s nest. Even if they kept a lid on it, it’d blow sooner or later, or drag on with no end in sight, exhausting everyone. And right now Keith was still in emergency care. While they had this window, it’d be best to untie the knot in Yasmin’s heart. Once Keith woke up, they could smooth things over. Those two destined troublemakers had probably made enough of a mess. Time to wrap the show.
• Yasmin glared at him, torn between laughing and crying. Chadwick Fullner sighed, took a tissue from Madison Sawyer, and handed it to her. “Tell me I’m wrong. It’s just one line. You know his heart only has room for you. He’s terrified you’ll be hurt, upset, pushed too far. And he just woke up—why unload on him right in his face? He finally came to, and now he’s back in the ICU. How’s this supposed to end?”
