You expect those few shots from that night to cut it? They’re taken from far away, through glass, with a face shield. You can’t even tell if it’s her. When we release them, her people can just deny everything. Hurry up and get more shots. Didn’t she already transfer out of the intensive care unit? That should mean it’s not as tight as over there, right? Get clear photos—ones that actually show her. Otherwise, handing them to reporters is useless. Without hard proof, they won’t write, won’t run it. Even if they do, her family will find a way to bury it, and we’ll only spook them.”
• Zed Mingjie got more and more irritable. “Take this seriously. If the money’s too small, say it. It’s not like I can’t afford it. But if I hand you the job and you screw it up—if it crashes in your hands—you’ll have to live with that.” His tone slid into straight-up threat.
• “Mr. Zed, I swear I didn’t… I really am doing everything I can.” The masked doctor knew exactly what that tone meant, and cold sweat broke on his forehead. He pleaded fast: “I keep trying, but VIP ward protocol is a nightmare. Worst part? There’s a camera right at the VIP ward entrance. Sure, I could block it or mess with the server room. But that guy inside never leaves her bedside. I don’t get any window at all. Daytime is packed with people, so I was banking on the night shift. But with him camped there 24/7, I don’t dare make a move.”
