Chapter 1257 The Studio (VII)

  • So Kate Penrose started teaming up with members of Brighton Enterprise’s board in all kinds of ways to win their support. The board wasn’t stupid. The power gap was obvious. If Kate took the helm, their pockets would be fatter. And right now, her power was growing by the day. Everyone got the hint without spelling it out. With that confidence behind her, Kate challenged Mrs. Wembley’s status at several board meetings, and the board clearly lined up behind Kate. Mrs. Wembley was so mad she almost lost it.
  • Mrs. Wembley had no real power base. The only person she could actually lean on was Mr. Wembley. And that was exactly what Kate was aiming at. The hardest hit had to come from Mr. Wembley. If he switched sides and stood with her, it wouldn’t just mean winning Brighton—it would crush Mrs. Wembley, plain and simple.
  • So at the same time, Kate started provoking Mrs. Wembley out in the open, pushing their conflict into the spotlight on purpose. Mrs. Wembley was petty and vindictive—she always paid people back. Too bad she wasn’t very smart about it. Most of the time, she just ran to Mr. Wembley to beg for backup. But Kate had learned her lesson. She stopped butting heads with Mr. Wembley like at the start and instead lowered her posture, tried to get along with him. He was getting old, and Mrs. Wembley had gotten cockier over time. The whole police mess had already left a bad taste in his mouth. Most of all, Mrs. Wembley was greedy by nature, snatching every perk she could for herself. Over time, Mr. Wembley started missing the good in his ex-wife—her patience and steel, her lightning-fast moves in business, her bold decisiveness. Kate had inherited her mother’s gift and looked more and more like her. If she was also willing to make peace with Mr. Wembley, of course he’d start to soften.
