• He had no idea if Miss Sawyer heard him. Either way, she shut her eyes and didn’t respond, like she’d slipped back into sleep. That scared Chadwick Fullner half to death. If Madison Sawyer stayed asleep and never woke up, he might force himself to accept it; but if she finally woke and then fell into a coma again—getting her back only to lose her—the whiplash would break him.
• Good thing the doctor hurried in. He and the nurse bustled around, checking Madison, stimulating the cortex, making sure all the reflexes fired right. Chad waited, nerves stretched thin, until the doctor came out. He blurted, amped with relief, “She’s awake. All tests and responses look normal.”
• Chad almost jumped out of his skin with joy and rushed to run in, but saw Madison still lying there like she was sleeping. His heart clenched. “Doc, why is she still out?”
