Chapter 49 The Caverns

• It was morning when Gerrit and Bianca returned to the site again. It was daytime, and she couldn’t find the scent she had smelled last night. Going through the area, they had yet to find anything that would verify whatever was there before the deputies arrived. Bianca was frustrated because she knew something was there, and something was watching until they got to the building above the warehouse. It was the old office building or, rather, what was left of the office building. Going inside, both Gerrit and Bianca knew that scent; it was the scent of death. It wasn’t what stopped them in their tracks. There were decaying bodies that were strung up; some appeared to be hanging for only a few months, while others appeared to have been there for a lot longer. But there was one body that was different from all the rest. It was new; the flesh hadn't started rotting yet. Seeing the wounds, she nudged Gerrit, "This was the body from last night. I don't understand; I thought they had taken bodies to the morgue?"
• "Let's go back to the station. I'll call the town's sheriff and find out if they are missing any other bodies."
