Chapter 28 Summer Of The 90'S

  • It was the summer of the ‘90s. Bianca couldn’t believe she was heading to her great-aunt's ranch, and she hadn't been there since she was five years old. Bianca was raised on a farm and always wanted to continue the tradition of the women in her family. Her mother was a barrel racing champion, and her father had raised and trained horses. Since her parents' deaths nearly twelve years ago, she had been living in the city with her grandmother, who wasn't in any shape of raising a young girl. However, Bianca made the most of it by helping her grandmother in any way she could up until her grandmother passed away two years ago. Bianca went to trade school, working whatever job she could find until her great-aunt had it in her last will that Bianca would be the new owner of the family's ranch. She already knew the place would need work, but she wasn't afraid of getting a little dirty, being that before she was nine, she was taught farm life. She had dreamt for a very long time to return to that life, even if it meant her working two or even three jobs to make it happen. Her great-aunt didn't have any children of her own, and she was her only living relative. The drive was long, but the scenery was beautiful. It reminded her of when she was younger. The sun was starting to set as she finally arrived at the ranch. There were no lights on anywhere, which concerned her slightly, but they may not have electricity out here. Bianca got out of her car and walked over to the front door. The lawyer said he would be here, and maybe he thought she had stayed in a motel and come in the morning. She looked around, and the small town wasn't exactly in the direction she wanted to turn back. She decided there had to be a neighbor who had a phone. Great, she thought. Her small truck needed fuel, and she didn't have the funds to get fuel and a room for the night. She shut and locked the door to her truck, taking her hunting knife and then tucking it in her boots as her father had done many times when he was alive. She climbed over the pasture and continued to walk because, if memory served her right, five miles away was her great-aunt's neighbor. She remembered hearing stories about the man who lived in the two-story farmhouse; he lived alone and kept to himself. She remembered very little about the area; most of the children she knew had grown up and left or were working on their own spread. Now was not the time to look anyone up as she made her way toward the big house, which was hidden behind tall trees. It would be night soon; maybe she should have slept in her truck, but she had to call to let the lawyer know she was at the ranch. Nothing else; she had no problem roughing it. It wouldn't be the first time she had to sleep under the stars. Again, she hopped over the barbed wire in the distance. She could hear howling, though it was a pretty good distance away; she didn't want to stick around for them to get closer. After what seemed like forever, she had finally reached the neighbor's front gate, which wasn't what she thought it would be like coming up here. She rang the bell, and though she didn't see the person talking, she knew they could see her. "You have an appointment?"
  • "No. I need to use a phone, please. I am Mrs. Silvia Morales's niece."
  • Radio silence; now she was thinking that her neighbor was going to be a douche-bag after all. She turned around. This time, she was gonna walk along the road; maybe it wouldn't be so bad until she heard the thunder rolling in. Great, two out of three of her plans had backfired; as the saying goes, if she didn't have any bad luck, she wouldn't have any luck at all.
