Chapter 55

  • Henrietta's plan seemed as bomb-proof to me as a house of cards. There were so many things that could go wrong. It would only take one person to notice that the nurse was missing, or another to happen upon the bloody room, for us to be discovered... or at least I would. And I hadn't even begun to consider what might happen if we were discovered. There was far too much risk involved, but neither of us could come up with a better plan. Hopefully, Henrietta's plan to use her power as Queen would buy us enough time to figure out how to get rid of the body.

She inspected me and wiped a small fleck of blood from my skin before straightening the hem of the simple black dress she'd brought me to wear. "I think we're ready now," she said, smiling to herself, obviously pleased with her handy work.
  • My stomach churned as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "Just let me do the talking, and you'll be fine," Henrietta said calmly as she squeezed my hand.
