  • The pain in my chest was excruciating, the wooden stake was wedged into my heart, and I could feel my blood vessels tearing inside of me. My hand rested on top of the wooden stake, and I considered pulling it out.
  • I noticed Luc edging away from me out of the corner of my eye. He stared blankly at the stake protruding from his chest. His face was gaunt, and he mumbled, "I'm sorry Celia," over and over.
