Chapter 12
- I noticed Luc sitting on the gym mat in his crumpled designer suit, staring vacantly across the room. The light in his brown eyes had faded into an absent glossy, and while he was physically present in the room with me, I could tell he was somewhere else- somewhere awful.
- News outlets are drawn to stories that exploit the suffering of others. It's difficult to understand why we find the misery of others interesting, but the fact remains that when a story about a family murder emerges, it has a morbid kind of intrigue. Questions are raised about who killed whom, why they killed them, and whether the killing could have been avoided. And while we may feel sorry for the people involved for a few seconds, we quickly close the magazine or turn off the TV and go about our business.
