Chapter 49

  • I opened my eyes as a cool rush of air filled my lungs. I was lying on the floor, staring up at the bathroom ceiling light. The bright light dazzled me, and I covered my eyes with one arm. My arm felt heavy and cumbersome to move, and as I moved, I could feel a sticky warm wetness that I knew was my blood without looking.

I wondered, detachedly, if the door was actually made of steel to withstand the force of Luc's blows. The thought was familiar, but I couldn't remember when I had had it before. The events leading up to this point were hazy, and all I knew was that I was hurt and Luc couldn't reach me.
  • I needed to get up and off the bathroom floor to unlock the door, so I rolled onto my side, slipping in the blood and glass. I began to crawl and slide towards the bath, hearing the sound of splintering wood as the bathroom door hinges broke through the wooden door frame. As Luc tore his way into the bathroom, the once solid and immovable door transformed into cardboard, fracturing and breaking.
