• I left the ice cream shop with a renewed sense of purpose. Henrietta had told me that there was a way to block Luc from my mind, and that if I could do so, I might be able to avoid the fate that he had planned for me. I returned to my dorm hall with Jacques, who was unusually solemn. He said little about our secret trip to Port Cressida and told me not to think about it too much until Henrietta had taught me the mind block.
• "Why are you so against this, Jacques?" I asked, frustrated by his lack of enthusiasm.
