Chapter 5

  • I said in a whisper, "No, this can't be happening."
  • He told her, "I'm sorry. This must be a terrible shock for you."
  • "You complete bastard, you complete and utter crazy vampire bastard- you bit me!" Since I had nothing else to yell at, I yelled at myself.
  • "Mia, you seem lost and scared. I need you to relax.'
  • Quiet down?! He bit me and forced me into a stupid marriage, and now he wanted me to be calm? Was he crazy? He didn't know what he thought was going to happen. We were going to just sit down and talk about it like grown-ups.
  • "I won't settle down! What have you done to me?
  • "Please, Mia, I can sense your anger and fear-"
  • I pointed to my fangs and said, "Wait, can you see these?" "What are these for?"
  • '
  • Mia-'
  • "I don't know who you think you are, kidnapping young girls and turning them into vampires, but you messed with the wrong lady last night, buddy!" I said furiously.
  • "Look, Mia, I know you're mad, but believe me when I say that you're the only girl I've ever taken and the only girl I've ever wanted to take." "Is that supposed to make me feel better? You sound like a crazy stalker right now. I mean, what kind of guy dates women in a cemetery?" I lost it.
  • "I'll be able to answer all of these questions later," he said.
  • "I don't want to see you ever again, so there will be no later!"
  • "That will be hard to do since we are married," she said.
  • "Then I want a divorce." "Vampires don't get divorced." He told Mia, "Look, you're just scared."
  • I was acting brave, but he was right: I was scared, worried, and terrified. Hearing his voice in my head without him there was both scary and comforting. I didn't like how it felt to lose my mind, but hearing his calm voice call my name made my skin itch.
  • I never planned to date while I was in college. College was a time of self-discovery and sexual awakening for many girls, but for me, it was always about getting my degree. I was always studying or working in a bar to pay off some of my student debt, so I never had time to date or hang out with boys.
  • To me, the opposite sex was a strange, foreign, and uncharted land that I never wanted to visit. But now I can't stop thinking about this guy. His voice and those beautiful brown eyes that glow amber in the moonlight are all I can think about.
  • He smiled and said, "I'm glad you like my eyes."
  • "I wasn't thinking about you," I hissed, feeling all the blood in my body rush to my face.
  • He said, "I wish I could be there to comfort you, but you were so upset last night that I thought you should have some time alone to adjust to your new situation."
  • I shook my head and said, "You're not real. You're just my stress coming out in a personal way."
  • "Mia, I'm inside your mind. I know that you don't think that.
  • "Okay, that's enough of you," I said as I went back to my room to get my MP3 player. "I need to stop talking to my mental breakdown and go to college."
  • "Wait, Mia, you can't go to class until you eat. I just ate a big stick of stinky garlic bread, so don't even think about kissing me!" I said that I was taking shaky breaths.
  • I looked through my MP3 albums until I found my hardest rock song and hit the play button. Heavy metal blasted out of my earbuds and drowned out everything else. I couldn't hear this person talk if he was.
  • Also, the dryness in my throat was gone, and when I looked in the mirror, I saw that my fangs were gone and my teeth were once again nice and normal. I sighed happily and kept getting ready for college.
  • When I left my dorm room, my music was still playing loudly. The screaming voices of my favorite rock band had shut up the man in my head. I left my dorm hall and went out into the November sunshine as I listened to the loud, angry decibels.
  • It was November 1st, and I was wearing big black sunglasses to try to protect my eyes from the sun's brightness. After sleeping in a dark room, trying to look at the sun was like trying to look at a 100-watt light bulb. My eyes hurt so much that they couldn't handle the dull November sunlight.
  • Usually, Halloween on campus was a lot of fun. Shaving cream and traffic cones were often used to desecrate statues of long-forgotten college professors and make teepees on rival halls. If a student was caught vandalizing college property, they would be kicked out of school, but that never stopped anyone. In fact, most frats thought it was a challenge.
  • I walked across the campus to get to my early morning class. As soon as I walked into the building, I realized that my black sunglasses didn't look out of place. The whole college department was full of people who had been drinking too much, including professors who were wearing dark sunglasses.
  • I moved through the crowd to get to the small seminar rooms in the back of the department. I thought that not many people would bother to go to the seminar today. After parties on campus where a lot of alcohol was drunk, there was usually a drop in people going to school.
  • When I got to the seminar room, there was a white piece of paper from the school's administration stuck to the door.
  • 'Dear students,
  • Your usual seminar teacher had to call in sick. Today, though, your session will be with a tutor who wasn't there before. He will be five minutes late because he lives outside of town and has to drive to college.

  • '
  • Even the teachers didn't go to class.
  • I opened the door and walked into the classroom. Since the classroom was empty, I could choose any desk I wanted. I moved to the side of the room and chose the desk next to the heater. I sat down and started taking out my books when a few other students came in.
  • "Did you see that man at the front desk?" One girl let out a gasp.
  • "Oh, God, I hope he's the substitute teacher." Another girl said something.
  • Again, the door opened, and a man I had never seen before walked in. The girls stopped talking and looked at him with wide eyes. I heard someone say, "He's beautiful." He had good looks. He had dark chocolate eyes and sandy brown hair that fell all over his face in a messy way. He wore dark denim jeans and a white t-shirt, which is a simple and classic outfit. He walked across the room and sat down at the desk next to me, which surprised me.
  • "Hey, is this the plan after the war?" He asked me.
  • "Yes," I said, not sure who this person was.
  • "Great! I'm a new student who switched schools. "Hi, I'm Jacques." He said, "I'll give you a hand."
  • "My name is Mia," I said with a smile as I took his hand.
  • Jacques turned my hand over, then quickly brought it to his mouth and lightly kissed my knuckles.
  • "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mia," Jacques said as he took my hand back.
  • I put my hand under the desk because I didn't know what to do or say. The whole class was quiet, and I could feel the jealous eyes of about half a dozen girls on me.
  • Jacques said loudly as he drummed his fingers on the desk, "We should have lunch together."
  • "Sure," I said in a weak voice.
  • "Hey," he said quickly, rolling up the sleeve of his T-shirt. "Tell me what you think about my tattoo."
  • Jacques came closer to me and showed me his arm, which was very fit and covered in black tattoos. The other girls kept watching, almost salivating out of the corners of their mouths. Sitting in my chair, I was nervous and wished I could just shrink away from everything.
  • "The tattoo looks great. Did it hurt?" I asked out of curiosity and to be nice.
  • "No pain, no gain," Jacques said with a cool air as he ran his fingers through his hair.
  • "I don't see myself ever getting a tattoo. I said, "I'm afraid of needles."
  • Jacques said softly, "Well, if you ever wanted a tattoo, I could always come and hold your hand."
  • At that moment, the classroom door flew open, and everyone jumped. I heard Jacques sigh and mutter, "He's such a baby," right next to me.
  • When the substitute teacher walked in, my breath stopped.
  • He did it.
  • It was the Prince of Darkness. He was in my classroom and was looking right at me and Jacques.
