Chapter 22

  • Henrietta got out of bed and walked over to the window. Her expression was guarded, and I couldn't tell what she was thinking except that something was very wrong. Henrietta drew back the curtains, muttering something about the inclement weather outside. Her voice was shaky and frail. She struggled to pronounce each word, resulting in a breathy mummer.
  • The wind was picking up outside as the autumn storm passed overhead. The rain pounded against the window, and Henrietta watched it despite the fact that she couldn't see anything. The view out my bedroom window was obstructed by millions of smears of raindrops driven down the glass pane by the howling wind.
  • "What is wrong, Henrietta?" I asked, sitting up.
