Chapter 47
- I lay awake in the earth, listening to the footsteps of the passing guards. Luc had put me to bed and then called the doctor to have my IV blood transfusion, which hung from my side and dripped nourishing blood into my veins, redone. The sickness was horrible, and the doctor assured me that, while rare, it would pass quickly. After that, Luc saw the doctor leave and shut the door behind him. He then sat down next to me and promptly fell asleep.
- I wish I could say the same for myself. There was a lot to think about but not much to do. I was trapped in the palace garrison, surrounded by guards and medical personnel all under the command of the King. Louis wanted my baby as his heir, and I had to find a way to stop him, as he was one of the most powerful vampires in the world. I considered including Luc, but given his fragile mental state and strained relationship with his brother, I couldn't take the risk. Luc would inevitably challenge Louis, and Louis would either lock him up like Casper or, more likely, kill him.
- So here I am, staring at the ceiling, unsure what to do, while Luc sleeps next to me, blissfully unaware of the almighty hell that is unfolding before us. It made me dislike him a little, because he gets to sleep like a baby while I have to lie awake thinking of ways to keep myself, him, and our baby safe.
