• The entire castle was a hive of activity. Everyone was running helter-skelter, pulling together the last-minute arrangements for the emergency meeting scheduled for that evening. We’d been preparing for war for some time now, so this wasn’t exactly a surprise—but the sudden rush still added its own stress.
• I called my second and third in command for a quick strategy meeting of our own. We needed to figure out the financial side of things so we could determine exactly how much outside assistance to request. Our coffers were dangerously close to running dry, and that was not the position we wanted to be in before, during, or after a war.
