• After gaining our lions, we stayed for two more days, continuing our morning and evening rituals—running into the woods and hunting. Lira and Clara understood that the place we were returning to wasn’t suitable for shifting or hunting, so they’d have to hold off until we could access the wild again and let them roam free.
• I wondered how Kenneth and the others had managed this. We were concerned about the risk of being discovered, but Malena reassured us. Clara and Lira had heightened abilities—they could mask their own scents and blend in just fine among humans without being noticed.
