- I was caught between bewilderment, seething anger, and a flicker of relief—Lucy’s parents were alive. King Pontione had instructed me not to reveal that fact just yet. We had to wait until the right time. I understood the reasoning, but patience wasn’t my strong suit. I wished I could see them immediately, but from the grimace on Pontione’s face when he told me, I knew they were in terrible condition.
- How could anyone with even a shred of humanity choose to be so utterly cruel? Yes, I knew the irony in that thought, considering what we are—but we are still part human. That part should make us more reasonable, more controllable. How could someone let the wild, animalistic side rule to the point of domesticating others and keeping them in horrific conditions?
