• The moment I heard Kenneth Jr. and Lucy’s car roll out of the courtyard, the lingering hum of their departure still vibrating faintly through the castle walls, I finally rose from bed. My limbs felt stiff from the restless night, but duty was duty. After a quick stretch, I headed for the shower. The warm water helped chase away the drowsiness, and by the time I stepped out, the sky outside our window was still dark and tinted with the last traces of dawn.
