Seats had been arranged around two large tables on which we would serve the meal we had prepared, after we were done. The council members would sit at one of the tables, while the workers would seat at the other. We rounded up our cooking in a few minutes, packing the food neatly into trays as the scent of grilled chicken and freshly made salad filled the air. I gave her a nod, balancing the tray and stepping out into the crowd. We knew how it usually went with these wolves; the catcalls, the name calling, the groping where they could manage without being spotted. A disgusted shiver raked through me as memories from my former pack came flooding back. It was one of the reasons I was grateful to work in the orphanage. I didn't have to fight off cruel assholes who thought with their dicks and not their brains.
