Chapter 76
- *Dante*
- The last thing she needed was to spiral deeper into fear. “The goddess isn’t killing you, Isabel. This isn’t some curse. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for this.” She didn't meet my eyes. Her gaze was locked on her skin, like if she stared at it hard enough she would get the answers to her questions. Her chest rose and fell too quickly, too erratically. I knew how vulnerable she was right now, how she probably felt exposed, fragile. There was nothing more terrifying to a wolf than a change they couldn't explain, especially a change that wasn’t supposed to happen.
- I closed the distance between us, pushing my worry aside to focus on her. My hands found her arms, rubbing in slow circles, trying to coax some calm into her. "Listen to me," I murmured, my thumb brushing along her skin. "We’re going to get answers, okay? I'm right here." Her breath hitched again, but this time, she leaned into my touch, just a little. It wasn’t much, but it was enough for me to see she was hearing me. She needed something to hold onto, someone to stand beside her while she fought the fear trying to take her under. I pulled my phone from my pocket, already drafting a message to Lila. She knew more about strange occurrences in our world than anyone else. Well, asides Morgan, but I was hoping it wouldn't come to that.
