• While I'd let myself believe she was doing a better job than I'd expected, taking everything in stride, she'd been plotting and planning behind my back. I didn't let myself believe for one second that she would turn out to be innocent. She was definitely hiding something. Maybe Henry was the person she was sneaking off to meet. Maybe she was the clue I'd been searching for all along. The clue to wherever Henry had taken Isabel. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Thorne and I were going to get ourselves ready. The next time she snuck off into the woods... we would be sneaking along with her.
• I ran a hand through my hair, steadying my breathing. It turned out that 'next time' came a lot quicker than I'd expected. I'd just taken a step out of the bathroom when my phone rang. I walked to the dresser in my briefs, picking up my cellphone and staring at the caller ID. My senses were immediately on high alert when I realized it was Thorne calling. He wouldn't be calling me unless he had an important update. Before I would convince myself otherwise, I brought the phone to my ears, answering his call. His voice immediately came through, sharp and urgent. “She’s moving. Right now. Heading deep into the woods.”
