• I silently followed Isabel up the stairs, eager to know why she hadn't told me the truth about the nature of her relationship with her former mate. He'd almost gotten physical with her for goodness's sake! Surely she'd known she wasn't supposed to be alone with someone like that? I would have stayed back in a heartbeat if she'd asked, if she'd so much as whispered she was feeling unsafe. If I hadn't shown up when I had, I hated to think of what could have happened. It was the second time today that someone had tried to act funny around her.
• I was grateful I'd been there to keep them in check on both occasions. It was starting to seem like trouble was waiting for her at every turn. I needed to do better at protecting her. I was going to take her on self defense classes if I needed to, which it was starting to look like I did. She was an Alpha's mate now, and therefore the stakes were higher than they'd ever been. Anyone who wanted to hurt me would easily try to do it through her. Forget the warriors protecting her, I needed to be assured she could protect herself as well.
