Chapter 57

  • *Isabel*
  • I woke up a little groggy, blinking against the harsh lighting of the room. My mind scrambled as I tried to make sense of where I was. It was bright now, much brighter, since the sun had completely risen. The memories of the early hours of the morning, just before dawn, hit me in bits, sharp and jarring. Dante’s eyes, those eyes that had been full of pride and make satisfaction in the beginning, had filled with what had looked a lot like betrayal in the end. His voice had been tight, full of anger. I hadn’t meant to hurt him. But I had. I recalled the way he'd pushed away from me. Gods, I had.

I had gone behind his back. I had crossed a line he probably hadn't expected me to. I had dug into his past. Into her past. Something inside me had needed to know. But now… now it felt like I had opened a door I couldn’t close. I sat up in bed, the room spinning just a little as I tried to steady myself. The guilt was tighter than the blindfold he'd placed around my eyes. I closed my eyes, recalling the look on Dante’s face when he'd put the pieces together.
